Overview

On June 30, 2022, a project permit was issued to Peter Kiewit Sons UCL (PKS) for maintenance dredging at 1950 Brigantine Drive, Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, on federal lands and waters managed by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority.

The project was approved subject to 31 permit conditions that PKS must meet to ensure that the project does not cause significant adverse environmental effects.

About the project

PKS will carry out 4,000 cubic metres per year of maintenance dredging in the water lot opposite 1950 Brigantine Drive in Coquitlam, British Columbia. Maintenance dredging is required to remove accumulated sediments in the water lot in order to restore design levels of -6.1 metres chart datum, and to ensure safe navigation and operation of marine construction equipment (i.e. barges and support vessels). Similar maintenance dredging was recently carried out in 2020-2021. The applicant is applying for a multi-year permit to carry out periodic dredging work.

The project will involve selectively dredging high points during each dredging operation (i.e. the entire footprint is not dredged during each operation), with a maximum target dredging level of -6.1 meters. Maintenance dredging will be carried out using a marine boom derrick, a clamshell dredger mounted on a barge or an excavator. Dredged material will be loaded onto barges for transport and disposal at an approved ocean disposal site, under a valid ocean disposal permit issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada.
